Global estimates of modern slavery:Forced labour and forced marriage

The 2022 Global Estimates report underscores the grave issue of modern slavery, affecting 50 million people globally. It emphasizes the enduring nature of these situations, with forced labor often lasting years and forced marriages becoming life sentences.

Despite commitments through Sustainable Development Goal Target 8.7, the report reveals a worsening situation since 2017, with millions more subjected to forced labor or marriage. Compounding crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, armed conflicts, and climate change, have heightened the risk of modern slavery, disproportionately impacting the vulnerable.

Urgency is stressed for global collaboration to address obstacles and restore progress in ending modern slavery. The report calls for a comprehensive approach involving governments, businesses, civil society, and international organizations, highlighting the need for technical cooperation and social dialogue. Developed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), Walk Free, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the estimates rely on robust methodology and data from various sources, emphasizing the importance of reliable information in addressing this critical challenge.
